How to Transform Your Life

Hello! Melissa here to tell you about the ways that transforming your relationship with food and health transforms your life.

But first, lets talk about why I’m even talking about life stuff when I’m a health coach. Health is only one piece of all the things that determine our quality of life. There are four others and it’s important to look at all of these as a whole unit. The five areas are known as the Big 5, and they are health, career, finances, relationships and spirituality.

One of the paradigms in my practice is “how you do one thing is how you do everything,” so if you look at how you approach your health, it’s likely how you are also approaching your career, finances, relationships, and your spirituality. This is why viewing our lives and our health from a holistic approach is so important.

I think back to when I was really struggling with food, and honestly, I was also struggling in all these areas. I was unhappy, stressed, and anxious and this affected my career, relationships, finances and spirituality. Everything felt like it was out of control.

A common example that I see in my clients, and something I have had to overcome myself is perfectionism. Some signs that you may be approaching your food and health from a place of perfectionism are:

  • Feeling like you can’t have just a small serving of something indulgent.

  • An all-or-nothing mentality when it comes to food or exercise

  • Getting completely derailed if you make a “bad” choice.

  • Yo-yo dieting (Side note: This is why diets don’t work, but that’s a topic for another day!)

  • Procrastination

  • Anxious feelings around food or social situations involving food

  • Bingeing

  • Being hyper-focused on counting, measuring, tracking, or weighing yourself

If this sounds familiar, consider how perfectionism might be showing up in the other areas of the Big 5. Maybe your perfectionist tendencies show up in your career and you feel like anything you submit needs to be perfect or you’ll never advance. Maybe you approach your relationships with others or yourself like this too. Perfectionism is only one example, but living like this can lead to chronic exhaustion, stress and anxiety.

How do you approach food and your health, and how might those patterns be affecting your Big 5?

The good news is that whenever you start to shift one of these areas, all the others shift along with it. I’ll use one of my clients as an example.

She came to me wanting to lose weight. She was unhappy with her body and wanted to feel confident. Ultimately, she knew her relationship with food and her body had to change. At the time, she was also extremely unhappy at work. She was stressed and had a gut feeling that this was not the right job for her. Her relationships were strained and everything felt like it was falling apart. Within ninety days, she completed transformed. She became so much more confident- not only with what she saw in the mirror, but with who she was as a person. She believed in the value that she brought and what she was capable of at work. Her relationships came together, and she was much happier overall.

In my health coaching practice I lead clients through a proven process to discover what they really want for their relationship with food and their bodies, what’s holding them back from having that right now, and then take them step-by-step to develop a transformation in ninety days or less. There is ALWAYS an impact on the other areas of the Big 5 because how you do one thing is how you do everything.
